Tuesday's assignment:

Critique.

There's not much for me to say about this, I feel like he's the professional and so there probably shouldn't be very many things to critique, but i'll try.


Aren't we supposed to avoid starting an article off with a sentence? It was on the list for cliche leads.
Second, I could have done without the grandmother being frisked part. Not because it was a bad sentence, but because it's a rather unpleasant thought, haha.
Third, the first paragraph is ridiculously long, I don't know if that's the fault of the person that filed it on the website though. It lost me.
Next, what's the Air Travelers Association? Is that supposed to be common knowledge?
And what is a "blah" response? Also, is it right to assume that all people know what a blog is? If I didn't, I don't think I would have understood a single concept in this article.

As for multimedia wise, there was a picture along with the article. However, the picture was of a plane from 2007, while the article wasn't published until over 6 months later in 2008. Why wouldn't the editor choose a more up to date picture? Seems like that would have been possible figuring that was just taken from a file.

And on a completely different note...

Hate is baggage. Life’s too short to be pissed off all the time. It’s just not worth it.

On Monday thousands of extra troops were deployed into Chile after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck on Saturday. The 7000 total troops will be placed in the areas closest to the epicenter of the earthquake to try and keep order after increased looting, arson, and tensions among survivors in the devastated disaster zone.

In entertainment news, more than 5000 people posed nude in front of the Sydney Opera House on Monday. The participants shed their clothing for a photograph by American artist, Spencer Tunick, who hopes to spread the message that Australians embrace a free and equal society for all sexualities.

Moving on to crime news, investigators are still searching for California teen, Chelsea King, after a man was arrested on suspicion of rape and murder in connection with her disappearance on Sunday. According to the San Diego County’s Sheriff Department, the park where King’s car was found is being thoroughly searched, and authorities are hoping to find the teen still alive.

Multimedia Journalism

This first multimedia example I found was about "Shutter Island". I liked that the article had the option to watch the movie trailer, which would be helpful for readers that may have never heard of it or the actors in it. The article also had box office results from the last week to give readers extra information as well.

The second example is from CNN, an article about "Xynthia", the storm sweeping through Europe which has killed a least 55 people. I liked the use of pictures since it allowed the reader to see images of the damages that have occurred. They also had a "story highlights" box so the reader could easily skim to see the overall story in the article. However, I think that if they had used a video instead of pictures it could have been better, especially if they'd interviewed people who had survived the storm.

The third example is from ESPN, which always seems to have pretty good multimedia features. The article was on Sidney Crosby's goal to defeat the USA Hockey Team. Not only did article have pictures, but also showed a playlist of videos that related to the event. The only complaints I have about it though is the tendency for the videos to have difficulty loading, pausing, and advertisements that could cause viewers to surf elsewhere.


I'll also include the feature on Transworld Snowboarding about Shaun White's Gold Medal Tour, although I'm not sure if this counts since it seems less like breaking news, and more of just a recount of what Shaun has been up to since winning gold...again. However, the multimedia aspect of it seems phenomenal, each day has either a video or picture to go along with the "summary" of his activities.


Overall, I actually prefer reading articles than watching videos, but I see the value in having them.

Tim Tebow Makes Pledge, Apologizes to Gator Nation After Loss

University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow speaks to the public after a stunning 31-30 loss to Ole Miss this afternoon. An emotional Tebow apologizes to Gator fans on his poor passing, turnovers and a failed fourth-down conversion. Tebow says, “I believe everybody else, the coaches and the rest of the players, to never let something like this happen again, especially when we feel we're better than a team and don't play up to our ability,” promising that good will come from the upset, which ended the teams hope at its first undefeated season. He says the loss will motivate him, and pledges to play harder and push his team for the rest of season.
